Dr. David Liu

Dr. David Liu, MD, is a Royal College Board-Certified Interventional Radiologist, Associate Professor at the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia and a Volunteer Professor at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. He practices at the Vancouver General Hospital, University of British Columbia Hospital and the BC Cancer Agency with a cross appointment in the Department of Surgery.

He received his Medical Doctorate (MD) from the University of Toronto in 1998 and completed his Radiology Residency from the University of British Columbia in 2003. He has his Fellowship in Interventional Radiology from Northwestern University.

He has published work in several areas relating to venous health including: non-invasive imaging, inferior vena cava filter management, and the advanced management of blood clots. He has been featured in a number of publications worldwide including The British Medical Journal, Consumers Reports, Popular Science, and UBC Medicine Magazine. His most recent award includes the Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) in recognition of his research contributions. He was also recently extended membership in the World Health Organization International Agency for Research in Cancer.

In addition to benchside and clinical research in the fields of novel embolic platforms, ablative technologies, and cancer related thromboembolic disease, Dr. Liu has held a number of industry positions, such as medical director, chief medical officer, senior consultant, strategic advisor, and member of the board of directors spanning medical device startups to publicly traded multinational strategics. He maintains an interventional oncology practice incorporating all aspects of embolization, ablation, venous access, and palliative therapy in all organ systems. He is the co-founder and co-chair of the international liver cancer symposium, SHOW, and has been credited with 7 book chapters, over 70 publications, and over 100 invited lectures around the world. Dr. Liu is an active member of the interventional radiology community as recognized through his induction as a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology and has been awarded the CIRA award from the Canadian Association of Interventional Radiology (CAIR) in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the practice of IR in Canada and worldwide.
