About Dr. Jack McAninch

Dr. Jack McAninch, MD is a distinguished urologist. He received his undergraduate BS degree at the Texas Tech University, an MS degree from the University of Idaho, and his MD degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch where he was an honor graduate and recipient of the Gold Headed Cane Award in recognition as the outstanding graduating senior. Dr. McAninch also received his general surgery and urology training at Letterman Army Hospital where he was recognized as the outstanding Resident Trainee and received the Robert B. Skelton Award. He is certified by the American Board of Urology, and joined the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) faculty in 1977. He served as Chief of Urology at San Francisco General Hospital and Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology until 2014.

Dr. McAninch is recognized as a national and international leader in the field of genitourinary trauma and reconstructive surgery. He has directed a highly recognized surgical team that has led the development of numerous new surgical techniques and new management methods in the field. He continues to be a principal investigator for many active research projects. His textbook, Traumatic and Reconstructive Urology, is a worldwide acclaimed publication. He is an active member of numerous medical societies, including American Urological Association, American College of Surgeons, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and Society of International Urology. In addition, Dr. McAninch has served as President of American Urological Association and American Board of Urology, as well as Regent of American College of Surgeons. He has been recognized by San Francisco Focus on numerous occasions and Good Housekeeping Magazine as one of the best urologists in the United States. In 2010, Dr. McAninch received the Ferdinand C. Valentine Medal, awarded by the New York Academy of Medicine for his contributions to the art and science of urology.

Dr. McAninch has also been instrumental in developing new techniques in urethral and external genital reconstruction. The use of fasciocutaneous penile flap reconstruction of urethral strictures has proven to be a highly successful single stage method of reconstruction for complex strictures. In collaboration with radiology colleagues, he has developed new methods of stricture evaluation, such as sonourethrography and magnetic resonance imaging of posterior urethral rupture. He has also developed innovative techniques in genital reconstruction (including penis, testicle, and genital skin) that have proven to be highly successful in obtaining optimum function and cosmetic results for major deformities.

Dr. McAninch has also been a leader in developing methodology that has improved diagnostic and surgical care of patients sustaining urogenital trauma. This has resulted in preservation of kidney, bladder, penile, testicle, and urethral function.
